Like to many in the Hicksville Historical Society, he was a true mentor to me, and was the person that started me into volunteering my time with the Historical Society. His presentations at our general meetings boosted community awareness and pride in our town. Mr. Evers was always present at town functions, one being our costume ball held at the Milleridge Inn. Richard also sponsored bus tours around Hicksville, showing landmarks and presenting historical Churches to the public. His work with School children is noteworthy, as he was even presented on VH-1 television as Billy Joel's teacher. Here was a man who collected and presented town history who became part of the town history himself. His published books on Hicksville are valued additions to our collection. His mark on the Gregory museum and the history room in his name at the Hicksville Libray transmit to us that we will never be forgotten. Both He and his wife gave countless hours of their time to this community. As President of the Hicksville Historical Society, I say to you that I (and the Society) have lost a mentor, a friend, a guide. But in our time together, I gained so much, as did the whole community of Hicksville. I believe that when I think of the name 'Hicksville,' I will also think of Richard Evers.Hicksville Historical Society NYhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09314572449928643111noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1631596925929913010.post-81328469518700945502010-01-18T04:43:00.000-08:002010-01-18T04:47:05.947-08:00Winter Social at the Gregory Museum Jan 24th 2010<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 110px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjV2Z_QM5HPlqHeY3kP8hN5BsKC9Lhx9xH70PFdgvKvQ4JA5ppJnzQnKJ8tldtnPIbvKTS-B7r145oDIQGatt58KS8LNLQXLw4LeQ-Unv0dWRf58upghhtjnXau2tQY4Azn9OAN7VxqOf20/s200/100_0001.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5428060336026054626" />
The Board of the Hicksville Historical Society has planned this years Winter Social, to be held at the Gregory Museum, January 24th, from 2:00 - 4:30 p.m. This years special guest will be Anne Kingsbury, Poet and educator from the Walt Whitman Birthplace. Then, our group had a good time learing about the types and styles of Miniature figures.
President Greg DeFranco started the discussion, followed by Scott Miller on the history of the hobby, then Rick Girardin on painting kits, and John Jefferies on casting miniatures. They had a table with some good examples, plus a presentation on several collectibles. President DeFranco mentioned a Model show, which will come up at the Freeport Recreation Center on Novemeber 21st. Society President Bob Koenig welcomed member Mark Thomas, as host, providing questions to ask our guest Veterans that night. Our five veterans that night, Michael Kilty (iraq), Richard Uhlick (Vietnam), Artie Uhlick (WWII), George Thomas (WWII), Sam Bergholtz (WWII) made for a diverse cross-section that made Mark's presentation so interesting. The Society heard tales of bravery, capture, and rescue that could have continued onto another night. Yet every Veteran showed mutual respect for each others tales. The Museum was kind enough to offer free admission for the day, and lots of people took up the offer on a cold winter's afternoon. The afternoon event was an "open mic" talk for Hicksville residents to discuss their history within the town. We listened to lots of exciting tidbits: Ruth Schrieber moved to Hicksville in 1925. Mary Colgan has had Hicksville roots since 1858! Jean Surtala had family here in 1886, and her family had a butcher shop on Broadway. Jessie Doyle had family with a general store on Broadway 1936 to 1956! Denward Collins remembers when there were only five traffic lights in all of Hicksville! Lois Calame, a 'newer' resident, moved to a Levitt house in 1950. And we couldn't have a historical discussion without our own Dick Evers discussing how he has seen the community transform. President and Vice president Bob Koenig and Rich Althaus and the board welcomed this memorable event.Hicksville Historical Society NYhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09314572449928643111noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1631596925929913010.post-48242874234847913192009-01-07T18:35:00.000-08:002009-01-07T18:42:13.755-08:00Happy New Year!
